The central courtyard of these holiday cottages was a bleak, uninviting area that did not reflect the character of this 5-star accommodation. We recommended a central feature consisting of four L-shaped raised beds to complement the symmetry of the surrounding historical buildings. This central design was augmented by enlarging and enhancing the existing small beds to give a greater scope for shrubs and perennials. We completed the design with a semi-formal, attractive planting scheme based on ‘hot’ and ‘cool’ colour themes. The design was low maintenance, and also created a much-needed, relaxing seating area.
